India: 6 Maoists killed in encounter with police in AP

Amaravati, June 16 (PTI) Six members of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) were killed in an alleged exchange of fire with the elite Greyhounds of Andhra Pradesh Police in Visakhapatnam district early on Wednesday.

A senior leader of the Maoists and a woman member were among those killed, a release from the DGP's office said here.

"In the morning hours, an exchange of fire took place between CPI (Maoist) and Greyhounds, the state's elite anti- naxal force, in the Teegalametta forest area under Mampa police station limits.

India: Navy's oldest Hydrographic survey vessel decommissioned

Visakhapatnam, June 4 (PTI) INS Sandhayak, the Indian Navy's oldest Hydrographic Survey Vessel, was decommissioned at the naval dockyard here on Friday after serving the nation for 40 years.

The ship was decommissioned at a low key event due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, a navy release said

The National Flag, Naval Ensign and the Decommissioning Pennant were lowered at sunset in the presence of Vice Admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh,Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command,the Chief Guest at the ceremony,it said.

India: AP govt floats global tender for 1 cr COVID vaccines

Amaravati, May 13 (PTI) The Andhra Pradesh government on Thursday floated a global tender for procurement of Covid-19 vaccine, from foreign producers, sufficient to inoculate one crore people.

Global firms have been given time till June 3 to submit their bids, according to Principal Secretary (Health) Anil Kumar Singhal.

"Some could be single dose and some double dose vaccine.

Based on the bids, we will make the purchase (of number of doses) accordingly," Anil said.

India: New 'very infectious' COVID strain spreading fast among younger age group

Amaravati, May 6 (PTI) The very infectious strains of coronavirus, B.1.617 and B.1, are currently found in the COVID-19 positives in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana and spreading fast in younger age groups, apart from adults.

The N440K is neither a 'variant of interest' nor is virulent now, the state Health Department has said quoting a study by the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology.

India: Man hacks six of family to death in AP village

Visakhapatnam, Apr 15 (PTI) A person allegedly hacked six members of a family, including an infant, to death and later surrendered to the police at a village in Visakhapatnam district early on Thursday.

City Commissioner of Police Manish Kumar Sinha visited Juttada village under Pendurthi mandal to take stock of the situation.

Police said Battina Appala Raju attacked the family members of Bammidi Ramana with a large sickle, allegedly owing to a running feud between the two families for some time now.

India: Adani Ports acquires residual 25 pc stake in Krishnapatnam Port for Rs 2,800 cr

New Delhi, Apr 5 (PTI) Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) on Monday said it has acquired 25 per cent stake of Vishwa Samudra Holdings in Krishnapatnam Port for Rs 2,800 crore.

This will result in APSEZ increasing its stake from 75 per cent to 100 per cent in Krishnapatnam Port.

India: AP govt orders return of 2,180 acres of land to farmers

Amaravati (AP), Mar 4 (PTI) The Andhra Pradesh government on Thursday issued an order for returning 2,180 acres of land, which was originally sought to be acquired for the Kakinada Special Economic Zone (KSEZ) way back in 2007, to the farmers following a protracted struggle.

The farmers who owned the land refused to part with their property nor receive compensation and carried out an agitation for many years.

India: AP gets 4.96 lakh doses of Covaxin

Amaravati(AP), Jan 12 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday received 4.96 lakh doses of Covaxin, the much awaited coronavirus vaccine.

A special cargo plane brought the vaccine to the Vijayawada airport from Pune on Tuesday afternoon.

From there the consignment was shifted to the state vaccine depot in Gannavaram.

State Health Commissioner Katamaneni Bhaskar said the first consignment of vaccine doses would be sufficient to vaccinate about 3.7 lakh health care workers in the first round beginning January 16.

India: Anti-judiciary remarks: AP High Court orders CBI probe

Amaravati, Oct 12 (PTI): Noting that persons occupying high posts were indulging in "waging war against the judicial system" in Andhra Pradesh, the High Court on Monday ordered a CBI probe into the "abusive, life-threatening and intimidating postings" in social media against the Judges.

The High Court asked the CBI to examine whether the attacks on the judiciary were made as a result of a "larger conspiracy" and, if so, take appropriate action against the culprits, "irrespective of the post and position".
