India: AP urges Centre to clear Rs 9,164 crore dues immediately

Amaravati, Sep 15 (PTI): The cash-starved Andhra Pradesh government has requested the Centre to immediately release Rs 9,164 crore under various heads, due to the state for several years.

Despite borrowing heavily from different sources, the Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government is finding it very difficult to foot the bill for numerous freebie schemes and has faced trouble even in disbursing salaries in time this month.

India: Andhra Pradesh again tops 'ease of doing business' ranking of states, UTs

New Delhi, Sep 5 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh has retained the top position in the ranking of states and union territories (UTs) based on the implementation of the business reform action plan, according to a report released by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday.

Uttar Pradesh and Telangana were placed at the second and third place, respectively in the ease of doing business for 2019, prepared by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

India: Colonel Santosh Babu's widow becomes Deputy Collector

Hyderabad, Aug 15 (PTI): The widow of Colonel Santosh Babu, who died in the recent violent clash with the Chinese troops, has submitted a report on her joining as Deputy Collector.

Santoshi was appointed to the post and handed over the report to Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar on Saturday, an official press release said here.

As per Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's decision, Santoshi was appointed as Deputy Collector in the Revenue Department.

Ten crushed to death in Indian crane collapse

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Ten people died on Saturday when a crane collapsed, trapping them underneath, at a state-run shipyard in the southern Indian city of Visakhapatnam, a senior police officer said.

The incident at the Hindustan Shipyard Ltd site occurred when a new crane collapsed during a weight-bearing trial, Suresh Babu, a deputy commissioner of police, told Reuters.

Rescue workers were trying to cut the crane and remove its pieces, Babu said. He added that if anybody was trapped alive under the crane, they would only be found once it was lifted.

India: Nine died after consuming sanitizer

Amaravati, Jul 31 (PTI): At least nine persons died after allegedly consuming sanitizer in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday, police said.

Prakasam district Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kaushal, who visited Kurichedu mandal headquarters, said the people had been consuming sanitizer for the past few days, mixing it with water and soft drinks.

India: Woman raped in Hyderabad, three arrested

Hyderabad, Jul 28 (PTI): A woman, working as a sweeper at a place of worship here was allegedly raped by three persons, who were taken into custody, police said on Tuesday.

The woman, in her mid-30s, filed a complaint yesterday stating that on Sunday night she was forcibly taken to the nearby bushes by the three men where they raped her, a police official attached to Afzalgunj station said.

India: Dalit youth dies after being "beaten up" by police

Amaravati, Jul 22 (PTI): A Dalit youth died in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh after the local police allegedly beat him up, but District Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kaushal said on Wednesday that he was drunk and picked up an altercation with a constable.

Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy took serious note of the incident and ordered payment of Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the victims family, a release here said.

India: Telangana warns against camel slaughter

Hyderabad, July 22 (PTI) Complying with an order of the Telangana High Court, the state government on Wednesday said transportation of camels for any purpose, including slaughter, into the state is illegal and anyone violating the law would be prosecuted.

Passing interim orders on a PIL which sought steps to prevent killing of camels during the coming Bakrid festival, the court had said it was the duty of the state to ensure that the camels were not slaughtered in the name of "tradition".

India: 140 Tirupati temple staff test positive for coronavirus

Tirupati, July 16 (PTI) As many as 140 staff members of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) that governs Lord Venkateswara's shrine at Tirumala, near here, have tested positive for COVID-19 since June 11.

The temple was re-opened on that date due to the coronavirus lockdown, a top functionary of TTD said.

Speaking to reporters, TTD chairman YV Subba Reddy said 14 'archakas' (assistant priests), 16 workers in laddu-making kitchens and 56 security personnel were among the infected.

India: AP CM announces Rs 15k for last rites of COVID victims

Amaravati, Jul 14 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday announced Rs 15,000 for the final rites of those who died of COVID-19, a decision taken after the Opposition TDP criticised the government for alleged inhuman handling of bodies of coronavirus victims.

The Chief Minister also warned that the government would take strict action against COVID hospitals if they were found denying medical treatment to patients.
