Fighting has been ongoing across the country since Saturday as two generals in charge, army chief General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and his deputy, the paramilitary commander Lt. General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, have turned on each other following a power struggle which has been ongoing for several months.

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Sudan’s rival generals on Wednesday made a new attempt at a 24-hour humanitarian cease-fire after a failed truce the night before. But sporadic fighting continued, and aid groups said they needed guarantees and a wider window to help civilians trapped by five days of intense urban combat.

Terrified Sudanese fled Khartoum earlier in the day, hauling whatever belongings they could carry and trying to get out of the capital, where forces loyal to the country’s top two generals have been battling each other with tanks, artillery and airstrikes since Saturday.

KHARTOUM, April 19 (Reuters) - Air strikes and explosions hammered Sudan's capital on Wednesday after the failure of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire between the army and paramilitary forces, forcing residents to stay hunkered down and prompting Japan to prepare to evacuate its citizens.

Continuous bombardments and loud blasts could be heard in central Khartoum in the area around the defence ministry compound and the airport, which has been fiercely contested and put out of action since fighting erupted at the weekend.

Thick smoke billowed into the sky.

18 Apr 2023; MEMO: A US diplomatic convoy came under fire in Sudan amid clashes between the Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF), the US Secretary of State said Tuesday, Anadolu News Agency reports.

"I can confirm that yesterday we had an American diplomatic convoy that was fired on," said Antony Blinken, who is currently in Japan for a meeting of G-7 foreign ministers.

KHARTOUM, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Tuesday announced that it accepted an international initiative for a truce to stop the clashes with the Sudanese army for 24 hours for humanitarian reasons, while the Sudanese army said it was not aware of the truce.

"A 24-hour truce has been accepted after communication with friendly countries and the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken," Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the RSF commander, said on his Twitter account on Tuesday

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — The Sudanese army and a rival paramilitary force that have been battling the past four days for control of the country agreed on Tuesday to a 24-hour cease-fire, Arab media reports said.

Hopes for at least a pause in the violence came as intensified fighting threatened to spiral even further into chaos. Millions of Sudanese in the capital and in other major cities have been hiding in their homes, caught in the crossfire as the two forces pounded residential areas with artillery and airstrikes and engaged in gunbattles in the street.
