"Heavy" revenge awaits perpetrators of drone attack in Syria: Iranian commander

Hossein Salami

TEHRAN, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- A top Iranian military commander vowed that those who carried out and supported the deadly drone attack on a military academy in Syria's central province of Homs would be avenged "heavily," Iran's official news agency IRNA reported on Saturday.

Chief Commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Hossein Salami made the remarks in a message addressed to Syria's Defense Minister Ali Mahmoud Abbas, and Chief of the General Staff of the Syrian Army and Armed Forces Abdul Karim Mahmoud Ibrahim to condemn the "terrorist crime" and extend condolences to Syrian government and people.

He said "the perpetrators of the crime and its supporters will face a major response and will pay a heavy price (for their action)."

Salami also called for the relevant international organizations, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to fulfill their duty and act against those who have occupied Syria and are compromising its people's security and calm.

Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Baqeri also condemned the attack, voicing the Iranian armed forces' readiness to continue and deepen cooperation in the serious fight against terrorism, its roots and those behind it, IRNA reported.

The attack, blamed on terrorists, took place on Thursday after a graduation ceremony of Syrian officers at the Military Academy in Homs.

The Syrian Health Ministry updated the death toll on Friday, saying 89 people were killed, including 31 women and five children, while 277 others were wounded in the deadly attack.
