YOUNDE, Oct 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) – A military court in Cameroon has freed opposition leader Maurice Kamto, who had been in prison for nine months and facing charges of insurrection.

His release, along with that of dozens of his supporters, comes as President Paul Biya is aiming to strike a more conciliatory tone.

Kamto was detained after organising protests in January against the result of last year’s presidential election.

The president, in power for 37 years, is trying to quell a separatist revolt.

YAOUNDE, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Cameroon's Minister of Communication Rene Emmanuel Sadi on Tuesday condemned violent protests that took place Monday night in the country's largest prison commonly called Kondengui Central Prison located in the capital, Yaounde, vowing that effective investigation will be made to bring out the truth behind the riots.

A fire broke out at the Kondengui Central Prison in Cameroon's capital city, Yaounde on Monday night after detainees, largely come from two Anglophone regions of Cameroon, held a protest in the overcrowded prison.

YAOUNDE, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Cameroon organized a workshop in collaboration with the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in the capital on Tuesday to lay the groundwork for the implementation of Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

Government officials said the two-day workshop gives Cameroon the opportunity to assess what the country will benefit from the agreement.

YAOUNDE, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Cameroon is "outraged" by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African affairs Tibor P. Nagy Jr. calling for the release of imprisoned opposition leader, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

YAOUNDE, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- More than 100 students and teachers of a private college in Northwest, one of the two war-torn English-speaking regions of Cameroon, were kidnapped on early Saturday, according to school authorities.

School officials earlier told Xinhua that only eleven students and three teachers had been kidnapped, but further investigations have revealed that more than 100 students and teachers have been kidnapped.

YAOUNDE, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese embassy to Cameroon confirmed on Thursday that the Singapore-flagged oil tanker, seized by Cameroon military over commercial dispute since Feb. 1, has been released with all its 26 crew members on board, including two Chinese nationals.

The ship is managed by Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping. In a statement published Wednesday, the company said the vessel departed Cameroon's western port of Limbe on Tuesday with all 26 crew members safe and unharmed.
