One step closer to euro as Croatia plans to send ERM II letter

ZAGREB, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Croatian Finance Minister Zdravko Maric and Governor of the National Bank of Croatia Boris Vujcic received a permission to send a letter of intent to European Central Bank on entering Croatia into the European Exchange Rate Mechanism Two (ERM II) on Wednesday at the session of the National Council for the introduction of the euro.

The Croatian government will confirm on its Thursday session the decision of the National Council for the introduction of the euro, Minister Maric said after the session of the National Council.

CEECs expect broader cooperation with China after leaders' meeting

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) - Speaking highly of the just-concluded eighth China-CEEC leaders' meeting, Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) express the hope that cooperation between the two sides can be lifted to a broader and higher level.

The meeting, themed "Building new bridges through openness, innovation and partnership," was held Friday in the southern Croatian coastal city of Dubrovnik, with the participation of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and leaders of 16 CEECs.

China, North Macedonia to cooperate on infrastructure

DUBROVNIK, Croatia, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met with North Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev on Friday, calling on the two countries to enhance infrastructure cooperation.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the eighth leaders' meeting between China and Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) at the southern Croatian coastal city of Dubrovnik.

Commending the bilateral relations, Li said China and North Macedonia respect and trust each other, and that practical cooperation between the two countries has yielded fruitful achievements.

China, Croatia to enhance cultural, tourism cooperation

ZAGREB, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said Wednesday that the two countries will enhance cultural and tourism cooperation.

Li and Plenkovic made the remarks when speaking at the opening ceremony of the Year of Tourism between China and Croatia.

Congratulating the two countries on jointly holding such an event for the first time, Li said both China and Croatia enjoy long history and rich and colorful culture, and picturesque natural scenery.

Chinese premier arrives in Croatia for official visit, China-CEEC leaders' meeting

ZAGREB, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Li Keqiang arrived in Croatia on Tuesday for an official visit to the country and the eighth leaders' meeting of China and Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) in the Croatian seaside city Dubrovnik.

Upon Li's arrival, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and his wife Ana Plenkovic led a warm welcome ceremony at the Zagreb Airport. Children dressed in national costumes presented flowers to Premier Li and his wife Cheng Hong.

Croatia court jails ex-PM Ivo Sanader for longer

5 Apr 2019; DW: The Supreme Court in Zagreb on Thursday increased former prime minister Ivo Sanader's jail term from four-and-a-half to six years for taking more than €2 million ($2.2 million) in kickbacks from a real estate deal while he was in power from 2003 to 2009.

Sanader was also told by the court to return more than €2 million in gains from corruption.

He was taken away by police to start his term in Remetinac prison.

German president warns of nationalism in a globalized world

In a jibe at recent nationalist tendencies across Europe, he said that "a withdrawal into the national shell that some are dreaming of cannot be the answer to Europe's past."

Greek president voices support for Croatia's entry into Schengen area

ZAGREB, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Greece will support Croatia's entry into the Schengen area as soon as possible, and next year will be crucial when Croatia assumes the EU Presidency, Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos said here on Tuesday as he started a two-day official visit to Croatia.

Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic stressed Greece's significant role in managing the migration crisis, saying it plays the role of Europe's first border guard.

Croatian gov't accepts UN migration agreement

ZAGREB, Nov 16 (Xinhua) -- The Croatian government said here on Friday that the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) is acceptable to Croatia and that the Interior Minister will represent the country at the next month's conference in Marrakech, a city in western Morocco.

The co-called Marrakech agreement, signed by 124 nations on April 15, 1994, brings a series of migration proposals that are addressing the issue of "regular" migration in the world. Countries representatives should accept it at the meeting on Dec. 10-11 in Morocco.
