U.S. soybean association chair says farmers prefer trade to aid

CHICAGO, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- "We would much rather have the trade and be able to grow a crop for a fair price," said Lynn Rohrscheib, chairwoman of the Illinois Soybean Association (ISA), in an interview with Xinhua.

Besides being ISA chairwoman, Rohrscheib herself farms near Fairmount, a village in Illinois. As a ninth generation farmer, she grows corn, soybeans and a little wheat.

3 policemen accused of cover-up stand trial in Chicago

CHICAGO, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Three Chicago police officers went on trial on Tuesday for alleged cover-up in the controversial killing of a black teenager by their colleague four years ago.

Jason Van Dyke, the fellow officer, was already found guilty of second-degree murder last month in fatally shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald in 2014.

The three Chicago police officers have been accused of falsifying reports to protect Van Dyke. They now face charges of conspiracy, obstructing justice and official misconduct.

Hundreds of flights canceled as snowstorm blankets US Midwest

CHICAGO (AP) — A winter storm blanketed much of the central Midwest with snow on Sunday at the end of the Thanksgiving weekend, bringing blizzard-like conditions that grounded hundreds of flights and forced the closure of major highways on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

“It’s going to be messy,” said Todd Kluber, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service who is based in suburban Chicago.

Shicago Hospital terrorist fired at least 30 times

CHICAGO (AP) — Moments before her ex-fiance fatally shot her in the parking lot of the hospital where she worked, a Chicago doctor called 911 to report that she had spotted the man and feared for her life.

As investigators tried to piece together the events that ended with the deaths of the doctor, a police officer, a hospital employee and the gunman, they were able to fill in details about the attack Monday at Mercy Hospital on the city’s South Side.

Violent Chicago weekend leaves at least 11 dead, dozens hurt

Chicago, Aug 6 (AP) Police say weekend shootings in Chicago have left at least 11 people dead and about 70 wounded.

The violence peaked early yesterday, including one shooting on the city's South Side that injured eight people.

The Chicago Tribune reports that by comparison, at least seven people were killed and 32 were wounded during the long Memorial Day weekend, often one of the most violent weekends of the year.
