India: Law student 'gangraped' in Ranchi, 12 arrested

Ranchi, Nov 29 (PTI) A 25-year-old law student has been allegedly gangraped by a group of armed men, following which all the 12 accused have been arrested, police said on Friday.

According to an FIR lodged by the victim with Kanke police station, the incident happened at around 5.30 pm on November 26 when she was with a male friend in Sangrampur area on the outskirts of the city, a police statement issued here said.

India: If Naxal violence continues, govt will give befitting reply: Rajnath

Pandu (Jharkhand), Nov 24 (PTI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday warned Naxalites to abjure violence, saying a befitting reply would be given if they did not do so.

The warning comes in the wake of violence by the left wing extremists in Latehar and Palamau districts of Jharkhand since Friday, in which four policemen and two persons, including a local BJP leader, were killed.

India: Naxal terrorists kill 4 Jharkhand cops

Latehar (Jharkhand), Nov 23 (PTI) Four police personnel have been killed in a Naxal attack near a village in Latehar district, police said on Saturday.

Armed Maoists opened fire on a patrol van near Lukiatand village under Chandwa police station on Friday night, killing the four policemen, including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), they said.

The deceased have been identified as ASI Sukra Oraon and home guard jawans Sikander Singh, Jamuna Prasad and Sambhu Prasad, a police officer said.

India: Starvation death in Jharkhand

Ranchi/Giridih, Nov 7 (PTI) A family in Jharkhand's Giridih district has alleged that one of its members died of starvation, but state's Food and Civil Supplies minister Saryu Roy Thursday said official reports on the incident deny the claim.

The minister said a perfectly laid out protocol to prevent death due to starvation is in place in the state.

India: Man lynched, another seriously injured in Jharkhand

Bokaro (Jharkhand), Nov 6 (PTI) A man was lynched and another was seriously injured when a group of people thrashed them for allegedly stealing the battery of a truck in Bokaro district on Wednesday, a senior police official said here.

Five persons have been arrested in connection with the incident which took place at Govindpur village, Bokaro superintendent of police P Murugan said.

Of the two who were thrashed one died on the spot, while the other was admitted to hospital in a serious condition.

India: Huge cache of explosive materials recovered in Jharkhand

Dumka, Nov 4 (PTI) A huge cache of explosive materials has been recovered from an under-construction house in Jharkhand's Dumka district, police said on Monday.

On a tip-off, a police team led by Dumka Sub- Divisional Police Officer Pujyaprakash searched the under- construction house at Seherpur village under Shikaripara police station and recovered 100 kg ammonium nitrate and 795 pieces of gelatine sticks on Sunday, Superintendent of Police, Y S Ramesh said here.

India: Jharkhand court awards 18 months jail to BJP MLA

Dhanbad (Jharkhand), Oct 9 (PTI) A court here on Wednesday sentenced BJP MLA Dhulu Mahto and four other persons to 18 months imprisonment for assaulting police personnel and forcibly taking away Rajesh Gupta from their custody six years ago.

Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate Shikha Agrawal found them guilty under Indian Penal Code sections 353 (assault to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty) and 325 (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt).

They fled with Rajesh Gupta, who faced arrest warrants then.

India: Naxal terrorists kill two policemen in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Oct 4 (PTI) Two policemen were killed when Maoists opened fire on security forces in Ranchi district in Jharkhand on Friday, a senior police officer said.

Following a tip that members of the banned CPI (Maoist) group had gathered near Dassam falls between Bundu and Namkum, security forces rushed to the area around 4 am, Additional Director General of Police Murari Lal Meena told PTI.

India: Woman constable raped by trainee sub-inspector

Hazaribag (Jharkhand), Sep 29 (PTI) A woman constable has alleged that a trainee sub-inspector of police raped her in Hazaribag district, police said on Sunday.

The woman constable alleged that the sub-inspector had physical relationship with her after promising to marry her.

But the SI was no refusing to marry her, she alleged.

India: Man gets 15-year jail term for raping girl in J'khand

Pakur (Jharkhand), Sep 28 (PTI) A local court has sentenced a 28-year-old man to 15 years of imprisonment for raping a 12-year-old girl in Pakur district two years ago.

District and Additional Sessions Judge Ramesh Kumar Srivastav convicted Gulab Sheikh under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code on Friday, Public Prosecutor Sivendra Kumar Singh said on Saturday.
