India: 1.14 lakh people affected due to rain and flood in Meghalaya

Tura, Jul 15 (PTI) Incessant rain across Meghalaya for the last seven days and rising waters of two rivers flooded the plains of West Garo Hills district, affecting at least 1.14 lakh people, officials said on Monday.

A total of 57,700 people, residents of 50 villages in Demdema block and over 66,400, residents of 104 villages in Selsella block have been affected due to the floods, they said.

Rising waters of the Brahmaputra and the Jinjiram rivers, both flowing from Assam, submerged the low-lying areas of the district, an official said.

India: American aid worker arrested for 'molesting' magistrate

Shillong, Jun 22 (PTI) An American aid worker was arrested for allegedly molesting a judicial magistrate at her home, police said on Saturday.

"We have arrested the American national, Theodore M Moallem, on charges of molestation," Superintendent of Police (City) Steve Rynjah told PTI.

Moallem and his organisation, Blind Lead Trust, have also filed a counter complaint against the magistrate for assaulting him inside the premises the family had rented out to the trust.

Indian Polls: 93pc voter turnout at repolling in Meghalaya booth

Tura, Apr 15 (PTI) Around 93 per cent voters cast their ballots during repolling at the Konarchar booth in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills on Monday, for both the Lok Sabha and the Selsella bye-elections, officials said.

The repoll was necessitated due to a mix up of the EVMs for the Lok Sabha and Selsella by-election held on April 11, they said.

Out of a total of 674 eligible voters under Konachar polling station, 665 cast their ballot for the Lok Sabha elections and 663 for the assembly by-poll, election officials said.

India: 3rd day of CBI questioning of Kolkata Police chief

Shillong, Feb 11 : Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar and former Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh on Monday appeared before the CBI here for questioning in connection with investigations in chit fund cases.

This is the third day of grilling for Kumar and the second for Ghosh.

Ghosh arrived at the CBI office here shortly after 10 am while Kumar reached an hour later, an official told PTI.

On Sunday, the probe agency questioned Kumar separately and also along with Ghosh. The marathon questioning of the two lasted over eight hours, he said.
