Presidential election kicks off in Mongolia amid COVID-19 pandemic

ULAN BATOR, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Presidential election kicked off across Mongolia on Wednesday amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with over 2.1 million people eligible to vote.

The vote started at 7 a.m. local time (2300 GMT on Tuesday) at 2,087 polling stations across the country and will end at 10:00 p.m. (1400 GMT on Wednesday), according to the General Election Commission.

Mongolia To Provide Financial Support To Olympic Athletes

ULAN BATOR, May 19 (NNN-MONGOLIAWEB) – The Mongolian government has decided to provide a one-time financial assistance of 10 million Mongolian Tugriks (about 3,508 U.S. dollars), to each athlete, who qualified for the Olympic Games, the government’s press office said, today.

So far, 30 Mongolian athletes have qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, to be held in Tokyo, Japan in July this year, the press office said, in a statement.

The athletes are expected to compete in 12 sports.

Two Mongolian Soldiers Arrested For Killing Commander

ULAN BATOR, Apr 11 (NNN-MONGOLIAWEB) – Two Mongolian soldiers were arrested today, for killing their commander and fleeing the scene, according to the country’s national police agency.

The 19-year-old soldiers fled with two guns and more than 40 bullets, after they shot dead their commander, at a border outpost in Altai soum (administrative subdivision) of Govi-Altai Province, in western Mongolia, on Thursday.

“This morning, the two soldiers were arrested 50 km from Altai soum, without any resistance and with the help of their parents,” said the police agency.

Mongolia's new gov't sworn in

ULAN BATOR, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia's new government led by Prime Minister Luvsannamsrai Oyun-Erdene took the oath of office on Friday night.

The oath-taking ceremony was held in the country's parliament.

"The government will develop a comprehensive plan to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, and start vaccinating our people within its first 100 days," the prime minister said at the ceremony.

Mongolia To Hold Online Int’l Forum, Exhibition To Boost Exports Amid Pandemic

ULAN BATOR, Nov 3 (NNN-MONGOLIAWEB) – Mongolia will hold an international forum and exhibition online this month, to boost exports, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the country’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture said Monday.

The event aims to introduce Mongolian brand products to the world, open up investment opportunities, join export networks, diversify exports, increase foreign trade, and create a cluster for exports.

Mongolia’s Ruling Party Wins Landslide Victory In Parliamentary Elections

ULAN BATOR, June 25 (NNN-MONGOLIAWEB) – The ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MPP), won a landslide victory in the regular parliamentary elections on Wednesday, according to preliminary results from Mongolia’s General Election Commission (GEC).

Preliminary voting results showed the MPP took 62 seats out of 76 in parliament.

Two coalitions, Right Person Electorate Coalition and Your and Our Coalition, won one seat each. Former Mongolian Prime Minister, Norov Altankhuyag, who ran for the parliamentary elections as an independent candidate, got one seat.

Mongolia Starts Parliamentary Elections Amid Pandemic

ULAN BATOR, June 24 (NNN-MONGOLIAWEB) – Mongolians go to the polls today (Wednesday), for the regular parliamentary elections, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The vote began from 7.00 a.m. local time (1500 GMT), and will last for 15 hours, at 2,070 polling stations across the country, according to the General Election Commission (GEC).

A total of 13 political parties, four coalitions and 137 independent candidates will run for the regular parliamentary elections, and more than 2.1 million Mongolians are eligible to vote, said the GEC.

Mongolians vote amid economic woes, anti-coronavirus success

ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia (AP) — Mongolians were voting in parliamentary elections Wednesday across the vast, lightly populated country, a U.S. ally squeezed between authoritarian governments in China and Russia.

The polls are being held amid considerable success in the country’s fight against the coronavirus, with just 215 cases of COVID-19 recorded. All of them have been imported and no one has died.

Mongolia offers Russia $1 mln in humanitarian aid amid pandemic

ULAN BATOR, May 26./TASS/: The Mongolian government has handed over to Russia a certificate for humanitarian assistance worth 1$ million to fight the coronavirus pandemic, MONTSAME news agency reported on Tuesday.

The certificate was handed over to Russian Ambassador to Mongolia Iskander Azizov by Prime Minister Ukhnaaigiin Khurelsukh. The aid initiative was earlier approved by the Mongolian National Security Council.

Mongolian Ex-President Enkhbayar To Run For Parliamentary Elections

ULAN BATOR, May 17 (NNN-MONGOLIAWEB) – Mongolia’s former President, Nambar Enkhbayar, will run for the upcoming parliamentary elections, the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP) said, Saturday.

“The legal environment for chairman of our party to run for elections has already been created. So, he will run for the forthcoming parliamentary elections,” Buya Tulga, secretary of the MPRP, said.

Enkhbayar was banned from standing for the elections in 2017, because of registration irregularities and a conviction for graft in 2012.
