The 61-year-old former boss of the notorious Sinaloa cartel -- famed for his brazen escapes from Mexican prisons -- faces life in prison for smuggling tons of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana into the United States.

New York faces messy roads after snowfall, hundreds of flights canceled

NEW YORK, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- A wintry mix of snow, sleet and rain hit New York City on Tuesday as a winter storm moved through the Northeast United States.

Snow arrived in the Big Apple in the morning and turned into icy sleet and eventually freezing rain, creating a wide swath of messy slush and a headache for pedestrians and drivers.

UN Security Council extends mandate of Experts' Panel on Sudan

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council Thursday adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the Panel of Experts assisting the Sudan Sanctions Committee until March 12, 2020.

According to the resolution 2455, the council recalled the final report of the Sudan Panel of Experts and found that challenges remain in the implementation of the sanctions regime.

The 15-member body determined that "the situation in Sudan continues to constitute a threat to international peace and security in the region."

Yemen prisoner exchange and demilitarizing of Hodeidah progressing

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Negotiations for the exchange of prisoners in the Yemen civil war began in Jordanian capital of Amman on Tuesday and talks on demilitarizing in and around the key Red Sea port city of Hodeidah are progressing, a UN spokesman said.

Also, retired Dutch Major General Patrick Cammaert, temporary chairman of the Hodeidah talks that are being held on a ship berthed in the port was replaced Tuesday evening by Michael Lollesgaard of Denmark, said the spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Stephane Dujarric.

UN calls for increasd humanitarian aid for Nigerian refugees in Cameroon

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- UN agencies and their humanitarian partners need to increase aid to Nigerian refugees in neighboring Cameroon, Stephane Dujarric, the chief UN spokesman said on Monday.

"The response needs to be scaled up significantly to cope with the influx of people, with many refugees reluctant to return to Nigeria's Rann area or any other camp in Ngala without assurances of their safety and security," he said.

Conference on Rohingya to be held in New York next week

ANKARA; 03 Feb 2019; AA: The Free Rohingya Coalition (FRC) will host an international conference at Barnard College, Columbia University in New York City on Feb. 8 and 9.

The two-day conference, with the participation of world renowned scholars, UN envoys, activists and refugees, will call for accountability and protection for national minorities in Burma, also known as Myanmar, the FRC said in a statement on Friday.

NEW YORK (AP) — Rami Malek says working with director Bryan Singer before Singer was fired from “Bohemian Rhapsody” was “not pleasant.”

The actor, nominated for his Freddie Mercury on the Queen biopic, said Friday at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival: “In my situation with Bryan, it was not pleasant, not at all. And that’s about what I can say about it at this point.”

The film earned five Academy Award nominations, including Malek’s best actor nod.

UN Declines Guaido, Favors Discourse With Maduro Gov't

UN; 3 Feb 2018; GANASHAKTI: The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recognized, Friday, the representation of the Venezuelan Government - led by its Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza - while rejecting the interests of deputy of the National Assembly (AN), Juan Guaido, who unconstitutionally proclaimed himself "president in charge" on Jan. 23.

Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for the UN secretary-general, confirmed that Guterres responded to a letter, which was sent by Juan Guaido asking the agency to send humanitarian aid to Venezuela.

UN Security Council renews sanctions against Central African Republic

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council on Thursday adopted a resolution to extend sanctions against the Central African Republic (CAR) for another year.

Resolution 2454, adopted unanimously by the 15-member council, decides to renew the sanctions regime -- an arms embargo, travel ban and asset freeze -- till Jan. 31, 2020.

It also decides to extend the mandate of the panel of experts, which helps the Security Council with the implementation of the sanctions, till Feb. 29, 2020.
