USA: Chinese envoy urges UN Secretariat to strengthen comprehensive peacekeeping budgetary performance

UNITED NATIONS, May 1 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese envoy on Monday called on the UN Secretariat to strengthen the comprehensive peacekeeping budgetary performance.

"The Secretariat should continue to strengthen the comprehensive budgetary performance and improve internal control, so as to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of peacekeeping operations," Dai Bing, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, told the second part of the resumed session of the Fifth Committee of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.

NEW YORK, May 1 (Xinhua) -- U.S. top banking group JPMorgan Chase announced on Monday it has acquired the substantial majority of assets and assumed the deposits and certain other liabilities of First Republic Bank from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

The FDIC was just appointed as the receiver of the San Francisco-based First Republic Bank, which was closed by the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation early Monday.

“The Secretary-General will be in Doha, Qatar, on 1 and 2 May to host a meeting of special envoys on Afghanistan to reach points of commonality on key issues, such as human rights, in particular women’s and girls’ rights, inclusive governance, countering terrorism and drug trafficking,” his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said in a statement on Sunday.

USA: E. Jean Carroll resumes testimony in Trump rape trial after mistrial denied

NEW YORK, May 1 (Reuters) - E. Jean Carroll returned to the witness stand in her rape and defamation civil case against Donald Trump, after the judge denied a defense request for a mistrial.

Trump's lawyer Joe Tacopina began cross-examining Carroll for a second day, hoping to show jurors inconsistencies or holes in her claims against the former U.S. president.

Carroll, 79, has accused Trump, 76, of raping her in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room in late 1995 or early 1996, and then undermining her credibility and career by lying about it online.

USA: Regulators seize First Republic Bank, sell to JPMorgan Chase

NEW YORK (AP) — Regulators seized troubled First Republic Bank early Monday and sold all of its deposits and most of its assets to JPMorgan Chase Bank in a bid to head off further banking turmoil in the U.S.

San Francisco-based First Republic is the third midsize bank to fail in two months. It has struggled since the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank and investors and depositors had grown increasingly worried it might not survive because of its high amount of uninsured deposits and exposure to low interest rate loans.

UNITED NATIONS, April 28 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations (UN) and its partners are establishing a core team in Sudan to address the dire humanitarian situation in the country, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator said on Thursday.

Shortages of food, water, medicines, and fuel continue to plague the country, particularly in Khartoum and surrounding areas, while access to communications and electricity is limited in many parts of Sudan, making relief operations even more challenging, the UN agency said in a press release.
