KINSHASA, Aug 18 (Reuters) - The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Democratic Republic of Congo has pulled out of one of the largest cities in the country's east after deadly protests against its failure to protect civilians, Congolese and U.N. officials said Thursday.

Butembo, a trading hub of almost a million people, has been one of the epicentres of violent demonstrations since last month that have killed dozens, including civilians, peacekeepers and Congolese police. 

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday said he was “concerned” about reports of the detention of an opposition political leader in Congo.

On the second day of his visit to the central African nation, Blinken said his delegation was “trying to get more facts” about the opposition figure’s detention which he said had happened “in the last 24 hours.” Blinken said his delegation had raised the issue with Congo’s government and he called it a “possible setback” in establishing “the right environment” for elections.

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, Tuesday to continue his three-nation tour of Africa.

In Congo, he will meet with government leaders and civil society groups during his two-day visit to discuss partnerships for regional security, human rights issues, environmental conservation, climate change and bilateral trade and investment, according to the U.S. Department of State.

GOMA, July 26 (Reuters) - At least five people were killed and about 50 wounded during a second day of violent anti-United Nations protests in Democratic Republic of Congo's eastern city of Goma on Tuesday, a government spokesman said.

A Reuters reporter saw U.N. peacekeepers shoot two demonstrators dead as protesters threw rocks, vandalized and set fire to U.N. buildings.

Some stormed the houses of U.N. workers who were evacuated from the city in a convoy of vehicles escorted by the army, another reporter said.

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — The remains of Congo’s independence hero and first Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba were laid to rest in Kinshasa Thursday amid honors including a procession through the capital, military salutes and music in front of thousands of people.

Congo’s President Felix Tshisikedi saluted Lumumba, calling him a humanist who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

“Today, the Congolese people are able to understand how and why he fought the oppression of the time without fear or trembling,” said Tshisikedi.

KINSHASA, April 26 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reported a second case of Ebola in the northwestern part of the country after declaring a new Ebola outbreak over the weekend, confirmed Tuesday the World Health Organization (WHO).

"Health authorities in the DRC confirmed a second case of Ebola in Mbandaka on April 25. The 25-year-old woman, now deceased, began experiencing symptoms 12 days earlier," tweeted WHO regional office for Africa, adding that the second case was the sister-in-law of the first case patient who had also died.

GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo, April 5 (Reuters) - A United Nations peacekeeper from Nepal was killed on Tuesday in an attack by suspected militia members in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the U.N. peacekeeping mission, MONUSCO, said.

The attackers were believed to be members of CODECO, one of many militias operating in eastern Congo amid longstanding conflict over land and resources, MONUSCO said on Twitter.

GOMA, DR Congo, April 2 (Xinhua) -- UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic od the Congo (MONUSCO) paid a final tribute Saturday to the eight peacekeepers who died during a helicopter crash Tuesday in northeastern DRC.

The memorial service took place this Saturday in Goma, capital of North Kivu province, in the presence of the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix.
