Senegal's Constitutional Council confirms Macky Sall's re-election as president

DAKAR, March 5 (Xinhua) -- The Constitutional Council of Senegal announced on Tuesday the official final results of the presidential election held on Feb. 24, proclaiming Macky Sall re-elected president of Senegal.

According to the results verified by the Constitutional Council, Macky Sall obtained 2,555,426 votes, or 58.26 percent of the valid votes. Idrissa Seck came second with 899,556 votes, or 20.51 percent.

Senegal president's camp claims election win, opposition objects

25 Feb 2019; DW: Senegal's prime minister has claimed that President Macky Sall was re-elected in a first round vote on Sunday, hours after the opposition suggested that no candidate had won an outright majority.

Prime Minister Mahammed Boun Abdallah Dionne, a Sall ally, claimed at midnight that the president had won 13 out of 14 regions with "at least 57 percent" of the vote.

"The results allow us to say that we should congratulate President Macky Sall on his re-election," he said.

Voting concludes in Senegalese presidential election

DAKAR, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Ballot-counting started immediately after the voting process of the Senegalese presidential election ended peacefully around 6:00 p.m. Sunday (1800 GMT).

In a polling center in the city of Dakar, an official of the Autonomous National Electoral Commission (ANEC) told Xinhua the center closed at 6:00 p.m. sharp as scheduled. All the eight polling stations in the center started the ballot-counting afterwards.

Ebola spreads to major Congo city as vaccines a concern

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — The second-largest Ebola outbreak in history has spread to a major city in eastern Congo, as health experts worry whether the stock of an experimental vaccine will stand up to the demands of an epidemic with no end in sight.

Butembo, with more than 1 million residents, is now reporting cases of the deadly hemorrhagic fever. That complicates Ebola containment work already challenged by rebel attacks elsewhere that have made tracking the virus almost impossible in some isolated villages.
