SINGAPORE (AP) — Singapore on Wednesday executed a Malaysian man convicted of drug smuggling after a court dismissed a last-minute challenge from his mother and international pleas to spare him on grounds he was mentally disabled.

Nagaenthran K. Dharmalingam, 34, had been on death row for over a decade after he was found guilty of trafficking about 43 grams (1.5 ounces) of heroin into Singapore. The city-state’s government has said its use of the death penalty for drug crimes is made clear at the borders.

SINGAPORE, April 25 (Reuters) - About 300 people held a candlelight vigil at a Singapore park on Monday to protest against the planned hanging of a Malaysian convicted of drug smuggling whom activists say should be spared because he has an intellectual disability.

Nagaenthran Dharmalingam, 34, has been on death row for more than a decade for trafficking 43 grams (1.5 oz) of heroin into Singapore. He lost his final appeal against the execution last month. 

SINGAPORE, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Finance Minister Lawrence Wong has been endorsed to be the leader of the fourth-generation (4G) team of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), which paves the way for him to be the next prime minister, the Straits Times reported.

Lee Hsien Loong, the current prime minister and secretary-general of the PAP, said in a statement on Thursday evening that cabinet ministers affirmed their choice of Wong as the leader of the 4G team after a consultation process.

Wong won the overwhelming majority of those consulted, he said.

SINGAPORE, Feb 22 (NNN-Bernama) — Singapore is gravely concerned at the escalation of tensions at the Ukraine-Russia border and the Russian decision to recognise two breakaway Ukrainian regions, according to the republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

SINGAPORE, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's non-oil domestic exports (NODX) grew for the 13th consecutive month in December 2021, but the year-on-year growth narrowed from 24.2 percent last November to 18.4 percent, Enterprise Singapore, a government agency, announced on Monday.

The electronic NODX increased by 13.6 percent year on year in the last month of 2021, extending the 29.2 percent increase in November. Meanwhile, the non-electronic NODX growth narrowed from 22.6 percent to 19.9 percent.

SINGAPORE, Dec 22 (NNN-CNA) – Singapore reported 280 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the total tally in the country to 276,385.

Of the new cases, 221 were in the community, five were in migrant workers’ dormitories and 54 were imported cases, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

A total of 456 cases are currently warded in hospitals, with 26 cases being critically ill in the ICU, the current overall ICU utilisation rate is 53.3 percent.

Liberty and democracy are turning into their opposites in some countries and the quality of life is declining, social discontent is rising, and social conflicts are tearing society apart, said the article written by Guo Liangping, a senior research fellow at the East Asian Institute of the National University of Singapore.
