Somali army says kills 9 Shabab militants in southern region

MOGADISHU, June 16 (Xinhua) -- The Somali military has said it killed nine members of al-Shabab during security operations in the southern region of Middle Shabelle.

The militants were killed on Tuesday when Danad commandos of the Somali National Army (SNA) conducted sting offensive operations at Marere, Sabun, Barow, MadinaAde and Galeef villages in Middle Shabelle.

"Al-Shabab militants suffered heavy casualties," SNA commanders told military radio on Tuesday evening.

At least 15 killed in suicide bombing at army camp in Somalia - witness

(Reuters) --- At least 15 people were killed on Tuesday in a suicide bombing as recruits lined up outside an army camp in the Somali capital Mogadishu, a Reuters witness who counted the bodies at Madina Hospital said.

Officials at the hospital confirmed the dead were killed in an attack earlier in the day at a checkpoint outside the General Degaban military training camp in the capital.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Islamist group al Shabaab frequently carries out bombings in the Horn of Africa country.

Somalia, UNICEF, ILO pledge more efforts to end child labor

MOGADISHU, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Somalia, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) said Saturday that they have agreed to scale up efforts to end child labor in the African country.

On the occasion of the World Day against Child Labour, they said in a joint statement issued in Mogadishu that ending child labor can only happen through a collective systematic approach with a strong understanding of the root causes and a legal framework that prohibits children from entering the workforce at an early age.

Somaliland opposition win majority in first parliamentary vote since 2005

(Reuters) --- Two opposition parties in Somalia's breakaway Somaliland region won a majority of seats in the region's first parliamentary election in 16 years, the National Electoral Commission said on Sunday.

Out of parliament's 82 seats, the Somaliland National Party, called WADDANI, won 31 and the Justice and Welfare Party (UCID), won 21 seats. The ruling Unity and Development Party, Kulmiye, secured 30 seats, the electoral commission said.

Violence displaces 250,000 in 2 weeks in greater Mogadishu: UN

MOGADISHU, May 7 (Xinhua) -- More than 250,000 people have been displaced in the past two weeks in violence and generalized insecurity in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, and its environs, the United Nations humanitarian agency has said.

The displacement took place in Banadir, Berdale and Badweyn, including nearly 200,000 in Mogadishu, in Banadir region, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

Somalia: Mogadishu residents flee amid splits within security forces

27 Apr 2021; MEMO: Residents of the Somali capital Mogadishu fled neighbourhoods today fearing renewed clashes between rival factions in the security forces, who have split in a dispute over an extension to the president's term, Reuters reported.

Government forces also raided an independent radio station and confiscated equipment.

Four Killed In Mortar Attack In Somalia

MOGADISHU, Apr 22 (NNN-IRIN) – At least four people were killed and several others injured, in a mortar attack in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, yesterday.

The Somali National Army (SNA) radio, said, al-Shabab militants fired mortar shells, which landed in Bondhere and WartaNabada residential districts, in the Banadir region, killing four people.

“Several other people sustained injuries during the attack,” the SNA radio reported.

Roadside blast in Somalia kills top military commander

18 Apr 2021; MEMO: At least two people, including a top national army commander, were killed when a roadside bomb targeted a military vehicle outside Bal'ad, Middle Shabelle region, an official said on Saturday, Anadolu Agency reported.

The attack occurred near Gololey on the outskirts of Bal'ad, an agricultural town 40 kilometers (24 miles) from the capital, Mogadishu.

Somalia, UN Warn Of Worsening Drought

MOGADISHU, Apr 12 (NNN-IRIN) – Somalia and the UN yesterday called for urgent action to mitigate the impact of worsening drought, saying, more than 116,000 people have already been displaced by extreme water shortages, since Oct, 2020.

In a joint statement issued in Mogadishu, the government and the humanitarian community warned that, high levels of population displacement are expected in the coming weeks and months.
