USA: UN chief calls for actions to change course before meltdown occurs

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called on countries to take decisive action to change course before it is too late to prevent a global meltdown from occurring.

While presenting his priorities for the year to the UN General Assembly, Guterres appealed for urgent action to achieve peace, economic rights and development, climate action, respect for diversity, and inclusive societies -- both today and for generations to come.

USA: UN launches emergency responses following devastating earthquakes in Türkiye, Syria

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- In the wake of devastating earthquakes that struck southern Türkiye and northern Syria early Monday, UN aid agencies have scrambled to help many thousands of reported victims, including those still believed to be buried under the rubble.

"My heart goes out to the people of Türkiye and Syria in this hour of tragedy," said the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a statement. "The United Nations is fully committed to supporting the response. Our teams are on the ground assessing the needs and providing assistance."

UN General Assembly holds minute of silence after deadly Turkiye earthquake

President of the UN General Assembly, Csaba Korosi, extended his deepest condolences to the governments and peoples of Turkiye and Syria for the tragic loss of life and damage.

He invited member states to stand and observe a moment of silence before a session started at the 193-member General Assembly.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 28 (APP): Nearly two years on from Myanmar’s brutal military coup against the democratically-elected government, the Southeast Asian country has sunk deeper than ever into crisis, undergoing a wholesale regression in human rights, UN human rights chief Volker Turk has said.

“By nearly every feasible measurement, and in every area of human rights – economic, social and cultural, as much as civil and political – Myanmar has profoundly regressed,” he said in a statement.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday urged the establishment of "guardrails" to prevent hate speech, extremism and misinformation.

"The online world is one of the main reasons that hate speech, extreme ideologies and misinformation are disseminating so fast around the world," said the UN chief, calling on all those involved to do more to stop the spread, and set up enforceable "guardrails."

USA: UN envoy ‘alarmed’ after Israel’s deadly Jenin raid killed 9 Palestinians

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 27 (APP): The top UN envoy for the Middle East peace process said Thursday he was “deeply alarmed and saddened” at the continuing cycle of violence in the occupied West Bank, after nine Palestinians were killed during an Israeli military raid.

The envoy, Tor Wennesland, described the deaths – during an intense gun battle at a refugee camp in the city of Jenin – which included militants and reportedly, an elderly woman, as another “stark example” of the escalation in violence.

USA: Pakistan urges additional non-permanent seats in UNSC to ensure regional representation

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 27 (APP):Pakistan, which firmly opposes more permanent members in the U.N. Security Council, has called for ensuring equitable representation on the 15-member body by adding more elected member to make it more democratic and effective.
