Clashes kill at least 30 South Sudanese soldiers, says VP spokesman

JUBA, Aug 7 (Reuters) - At least 30 South Sudanese soldiers were killed and 13 injured in clashes between forces loyal to Vice President Riek Machar and a splinter group, Machar’s party spokesman said in a statement on Saturday.

In a move that risks derailing the country's already fragile peace process, rival military leaders of Machar's party SPLM/A-IO, announced on Wednesday that the vice president was ousted as head of his party and its armed forces. 

Peace Monitors Welcome Swearing In Of South Sudan’s Parliament

JUBA, Aug 4 (NNN-SUNA) – South Sudan’s peace monitors, yesterday, welcomed the swearing-in of 595 legislators in both the Upper and Lower Houses, after several delays by the parties to the 2018 revitalised peace deal.

The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) said, in a statement issued in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, that, the swearing-in of the 503 members of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) and 92 members of the Council of States, Monday, will help speed up the enactment of key legislations recommended in the peace deal.

Chinese medical team provides support to needy children in South Sudan

JUBA, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Members of the eighth batch of the Chinese medical team on Sunday donated essential support including medicines and food to needy children in South Sudan.

Hellen Murshal Boro, executive director of Confident Children out of Conflict (CCC) lauded the Chinese medical team for their support toward needy children being sheltered at CCC orphanage.

UN agencies recently warned that 7.24 million South Sudanese are on the brink of catastrophe as food insecurity worsens because of flooding, conflicts, and the coronavirus.

U.N. panel says South Sudan blocking its missions to violence-hit areas

JUBA (Reuters) - Implementation of South Sudan’s 2018 peace accord has stalled and authorities have blocked humanitarian access to areas where conflict has restarted, the U.N. panel of experts said in a report seen by Reuters on Thursday.

They also said there was a lack of transparency in how the government collected and spent oil and other revenues.

The government disputed the findings, saying agencies had access to all areas and it was working to fix the economy.

Chinese peacekeepers donate supplies to South Sudan's police for COVID-19 fight

JUBA, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese peacekeepers on Wednesday donated materials to help South Sudan's Central Equatoria regional police boost the fight against COVID-19, the Chinese embassy in South Sudan said.

Chinese UN police (UNPOL) serving in the United Nations mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) also shared best practices and experience in mitigating the pandemic.

South Sudan warned of surge of COVID-19 amid relaxation of measures

JUBA, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan doctors have warned of a second wave of COVID-19 pandemic unless preventive measures are stepped up to avoid resurgence.

The South Sudan Doctors Union (SSDU) warned that the east African country is most likely to experience a second wave of COVID-19 outbreak with more morbidity and mortality without heightened efforts to fight the virus.

Sudan and main rebel groups formalise peace deal

JUBA (Reuters) - Sudan’s power-sharing government and several rebel groups on Saturday formalised a peace agreement aimed at resolving decades of conflict which left millions displaced and hundreds of thousands dead.

Three major groups signed a preliminary deal in August - two factions from the western region of Darfur and one from the southern region - after months of talks hosted by South Sudan.

UN appeals for 390 mln USD to boost South Sudan response to COVID-19

JUBA, June 16 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on Tuesday launched a funding appeal worth 390 million U.S. dollars to boost response to COVID-19 pandemic in South Sudan.

Alain Noudehou, humanitarian coordinator in South Sudan, said the latest funding appeal will help provide assistance to 7.4 million people by the end of the year, up from 5.4 million who are in need of emergency aid.

South Sudan vice-president and wife ‘recovers from coronavirus’

JUBA, June 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) — South Sudan’s First Vice-President Riek Machar and his wife, Defence Minister Angelina Teny, have recovered from Covid-19.

The two tested positive for Coronavirus three weeks ago.

The Sudan Tribune newspaper quoted a statement from Machar’s office as saying that he had been discharged on Saturday “having fully recovered”.
