Pakistan: FM arrives in Tajikistan to attend SCO-CFM

DUSHANBE, July 12 (APP): Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi arrived in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on Monday to attend Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM).

The foreign minister was received by Tajikistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sharf Sher Alizada, Pakistan’s ambassador in Tajikistan Imran Haider at Dushanbe International Airport.

During his three-day visit, the foreign minister will lead Pakistan’s delegation at the SCO-CFM.

Tajikistan earthquake kills five-emergency committee

July 10 (Reuters) - An earthquake in Tajikistan killed five people, the Tajik emergency situations committee said on Saturday, with the epicentre of the quake 165 kilometres northeast of the capital city of Dushanbe.

The quake of magnitude 5.9 struck 27 km (17 miles) east of Rasht in Tajikistan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

It was at a depth of 40 km and was also about 153 km south east of Khujand, Tajikistan, according to the EMSC.

Hundreds of Afghan servicemen flown back from Tajikistan - Tajik security source

DUSHANBE, July 7 (Reuters) - Almost 300 Afghan servicemen who crossed the border into Tajikistan while retreating from Taliban militants were flown home in the early hours of Wednesday, a Tajik security source told Reuters.

Hundreds of Afghan security personnel retreated across the Tajik-Afghan border this month in response to Taliban advances in northern Afghanistan, underlining a rapidly deteriorating situation as foreign troops near a complete withdrawal after 20 years of war and with peace negotiations stalled.

Afghan security personnel flee into Tajikistan as Taliban advance

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan/KABUL, July 5 (Reuters) - More than 1,000 Afghan security personnel have fled across the border into Tajikistan after Taliban advances in northern Afghanistan, the Tajik border guard service said on Monday, while dozens of others were captured by the insurgents.

The crossings on Sunday underscore a rapidly deteriorating situation in the country as foreign troops near a complete withdrawal after 20 years of war in Afghanistan and with peace negotiations stalled.

West opposes integrational processes on post-Soviet territory, says Russian defense chief

DUSHANBE, April 27. /TASS/: The West is actively opposing integration processes in the post-Soviet area, and the potential for conflict is building up around the perimeter of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said Tuesday.

According to Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin, Shoigu noted during the meeting of CSTO Defense Ministers, that the "spectrum of threats and challenges has widened significantly" in the Post-Soviet security bloc’s regions.

Pakistan will continue to support political solution for Afghan conflict: FM

DUSHANBE (Tajikistan), March 30 (APP): Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Tuesday said Pakistan would continue to support a peaceful and stable Afghanistan through a political instead of a military solution to the conflict.

In his address at the 9th Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process (HoA-IP) Ministerial Conference in the Tajik capital, the foreign minister called for a united approach by regional countries to help restore the prosperity of the Afghan people.

Tajikistan leader's son named senate speaker

DUSHANBE (Reuters) - The eldest son of Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon was elected as speaker in the senate on Friday, cementing the family’s grip on power in the Central Asian nation ahead of a presidential election.

Rustam Emomali, 32, who also serves as mayor of the capital Dushanbe, was elected speaker of the upper house of parliament unanimously, the senate press office said.

Under Tajikistan’s constitution, the speaker assumes presidential powers in the event of the president’s death or any inability to perform his duties.

Air regiment in Eastern Siberia to receive Kinzhal hypersonic missiles by 2024

DUSHANBE, February 27. /TASS/: The air regiment stationed in Kansk in the Krasnoyarsk Region will be rearmed with Kinzhal hypersonic cruise missiles by 2024, Central Military District Commander Colonel-General Alexander Lapin said on Thursday.

"In accordance with the plan, we are to rearm the Kansk regiment with Kinzhal hypersonic cruise missiles by 2024," the commander stated.

Tajikistan arrests 113 alleged Muslim Brotherhood members

DUSHANBE (Reuters) - Tajikistan has arrested 113 people charged with being members of Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organization outlawed in the Central Asian nation, Prosecutor General Yusuf Rakhmon said on Tuesday.

Among those arrested over the course of this month were two foreigners, one municipal official, and more than 20 university professors, he told a briefing.
