SANAA, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Houthi rebels in Yemen on Saturday pledged to attend the upcoming peace talks in Sweden, a Houthi chief said.

The commitment was made by Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, head of Houthi revolutionary committee, during his meeting with visiting UN envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths in Sanna.

"Griffiths received affirm confirmation from the revolution to support peace efforts and attend peace talks," al-Houthi said in a statement.

"Griffiths told me that he bears good impression from his yesterday's visit to Hodeidah," he added.

Griffiths's visit is intended to send a message to the rebels, who control the Red Sea city, and the government forces, who have been attacking it with support from a Saudi-led coalition, to keep a lid on hostilities in the runup to the talks in Sweden, a UN source told AFP.

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Yemen’s Shiite rebels said Monday that they will halt rocket fire into Saudi Arabia for the sake of peace efforts, answering a key Saudi demand in the latest push to stop the civil war in the Arab world’s poorest country.

But the rebels also said they had fired a ballistic missile into Saudi Arabia overnight in response to an attempted border incursion and a Saudi airstrike, and that they reserved the right to respond to attacks.

12 Nov 2018; AFP: At least 149 people including civilians have been killed in 24 hours of clashes between government loyalists and rebels in Yemen's flashpoint city of Hodeida, medics and military sources said Monday.

A military official in Hodeida confirmed seven civilians had died, without giving further details.

The Red Sea port city, controlled by Yemen's Huthi rebels since 2014, is a vital entry point for aid into the impoverished country.

ADEN, Yemen, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Armed confrontations between Yemen's government forces and the Houthi rebels in the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah left around 80 dead within the past 24 hours, local sources said on Sunday.

A medical source based in the city confirmed to Xinhua that "the majority of the killed people were Houthi fighters targeted by Saudi-led airstrikes during the ongoing fighting in Hodeidah."

SANAA, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- In a public hospital in downtown Yemen's rebel-held capital Sanaa, doctors are on emergency state over a sudden flare-up of deadly diphtheria.

The intensified care unit is full of sick children and women infected with the disease, a bacterial infection spread from person to person through coughing or sneezing.

The disease causes a thick covering in the back of the throat and the most serious cases can kill a child within hours if not treated immediately.

SANAA, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least 15 people were killed on Wednesday in airstrikes by Saudi-led coalition warplanes fighting Houthi rebels in Yemen's Red Sea port city of Hodeidah, a hospital source said.

"Fifteen people, including five civilians and 10 rebel fighters were killed in the airstrikes that targeted several rebel sites and rebel-controlled checkpoints near and around Kilo 16 road linking the capital Sanaa," the source said on condition of anonymity.

TASS, August 28. The Saudi-led coalition carried out a series of strikes on the international airport in Yemen’s capital of Sana’a, Al Masirah TV channel reported on Tuesday.

The air strikes targeted more than ten facilities, including a military air base located near the airport, according to the report.

Sky News Arabiya TV channel reported that the alliance carried out 11 strikes on the Houthi rebels’ positions. The coalition’s aircraft continue intense flights over the Yemeni capital.
