Skipper of cruiser that sank Budapest tour boat arrested

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Hungarian police detained the captain of a cruise ship that collided with and sank a sightseeing boat packed with South Korean tourists, as rescue crews geared up to raise the vessel from the bottom of the Danube River in the heart of Budapest while scouring the waters for 21 people still missing.

Seven people are confirmed dead and seven have been rescued, all of them South Koreans, Hungarian officials said. Hungary’s state TV reported that all those rescued have been released from the hospital except one who is being treated for broken ribs.

Aussie man suffers heart attack while climbing iconic Uluru

CANBERRA, May 30 (Xinhua) -- An elderly Australian man has suffered a heart attack while climbing Uluru, just months before the iconic rock is closed to climbers on October.

The 64-year-old man was halfway through the hour-long climb of Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, with a tour group on Tuesday when he entered cardiac arrest.

Two paramedics were quick to help, and two off-duty police officers were able to get the man's heart back into "survivable rhythm" with a defibrillator while awaiting the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Pakistan: Passengers to get 50 percent discount on all trains on Eid day

ISLAMABAD, May 28 (APP): Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Tuesday announced 50 percent discount on all trains on Eid day to facilitate the passengers across the country.

“This a special gift for passengers on Eid day and I also thank the travelers who will use Pakistan Railways for travelling,” the minister said in a statement issued here.

Chinese tourism to US drops for 1st time in 15 years

Detroit (US), May 28 (AP/PTI) After more than a decade of rapid growth, Chinese travel to the U.S. is falling. And that has cities, malls and other tourist spots scrambling to reverse the trend.

Travel from China to the U.S. fell 5.7% in 2018 to 2.9 million visitors, according to the National Travel and Tourism Office, which collects data from U.S. Customs forms. It was the first time since 2003 that Chinese travel to the U.S. slipped from the prior year.

Boeing with 149 passengers onboard makes emergency landing at Siberian airport

IRKUTSK, May 28. /TASS/: A Boeing aircraft of Nordwind Airlines en route from Blagoveshchensk to Moscow made an emergency landing in Irkutsk, East Siberia, on Tuesday, the airport’s press service told TASS.

"The plane of Nordwind Airlines made an emergency landing in Irkutsk while performing a flight from Blagoveshchensk to Moscow," the spokesperson said.

There are 149 passengers onboard the plane. The preliminary cause of the incident is an altitude indicator failure.

California man killed by shark in Hawaii loved the water

MAUI, Hawaii (AP) — The California man killed by a shark in Hawaii over the weekend was a frequent visitor to the islands and an avid scuba diver who had recently retired, a friend said.

A shark attacked 65-year-old Thomas Smiley while he was swimming Saturday in the Ka’anapali Beach Park area on Maui, police said.

A witness said that when rescuers pulled him to shore and began CPR, he was missing a leg from the knee down. Smiley died at the scene.

Deaths rise as Nepal issues more permits for Mount Everest

NAMCHE, Nepal (AP) — Nepal’s reluctance to limit the number of permits it issues to scale Mount Everest has contributed to dangerous overcrowding, with inexperienced climbers impeding others and causing deadly delays, seasoned mountaineers said.

During the short period this season when the weather was clear enough to attempt the summit, climbers were crammed crampon-to-crampon above South Col’s sharp-edged ridge, all clipped onto a single line of rope, trudging toward the top of the world and risking death as each minute ticked by.

Volcano on Bali erupts, briefly disrupting flights

Jakarta, Mar 25; PTI/GANASHAKTI: Bali's airport has returned to normal operations after some flights were cancelled on Friday night following an eruption of the Mount Agung volcano that spread ash over the south of the Indonesian island.

The national disaster agency said the eruption lasted 4 minutes and 30 seconds and spread lava and incandescent rocks about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) from the crater.

Turkey Security forces seize 1400-year-old book

DIYARBAKIR, 24 May 2019; AA: A religious motivational book believed to have been written 1,400 years ago was seized Friday by security forces in southeastern Turkey.

The 36-page book written on papyrus paper was seized in an operation carried out by local gendarmes in Diyarbakir province.

The anti-smuggling and organized crime unit of the gendarmerie received a tip off that three people were looking for customers for an an ancient book, the local governor's office said.

Trump to visit Ireland during upcoming Europe trip

WASHINGTON, May 21 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump will visit Ireland during his Europe trip in early June, announced the White House on Tuesday.

The president and first lady Melania Trump have accepted the invitation of Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar to visit Ireland, and Trump will hold talks with Varadkar on June 5, said the White House in a statement.

Trump is expected to pay a state visit to Britain on June 3-5, and then travel to France to observe the D-Day anniversary in Normandy on June 6 and meet French President Emmanuel Macron.
