Egypt to adopt Russian payment system: Central Bank of Egypt

Cairo; 11 Sep 2022 (UMMN):  In a bid to promote Russian tourism in the country, Egypt is to allow tourists to pay through the Russian Mir system starting later this month, an Egyptian Central Bank official told Al-Monitor.

Russian Ruble will be on the list of currencies used by Egyptian banks and be used by tourism companies and hotels.

Jordan: ex-minister calls on Palestinians not to use Israeli airport

Tanzania: Maasai people face violence, eviction amid protests over game reserve

22 June 2022; MEMO: Tanzania's Maasai people have faced a violent crackdown from police over the past two weeks, amid plans to evict them from their ancestral homeland in parts of the Serengeti National Park to make way for trophy hunting and conservation zones.

Human rights organisations and the Maasai people have accused Tanzanian police of using teargas, live bullets and beating protestors who oppose the planned development in the Ngorongoro district near the village of Ololosokwani.

Algeria suspends tourism ties with Spain amid tension

20 June 2022; MEMO: Algeria suspended all tourism ties with Spain on Monday in a new escalation of tension between the two countries over the disputed Western Sahara region, Anadolu News Agency reports.

A document dated 19 June by the Algerian Tourism Ministry asked all tour operators to immediately suspend tourism relations with Spain. The document said the suspension was part of Algeria's decision to suspend a friendship treaty with Madrid.

Qatar plans 1000 'Bedouin tents' to house World Cup fans

14 June 2022; MEMO: Qatar plans to pitch 1,000 "Bedouin style" tents in the desert for World Cup soccer fans, organisers said on Tuesday, as the State hopes to attract 1.2 million visitors, nearly half of its population, for the 28-day tournament in November and December, Reuters reports.

Tents will spring up on the stark desert landscapes surrounding Doha, to offer visitors an authentic taste of Qatari camping, said Omar Al-Jaber, head of accommodation at tournament organiser, The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy.

Turkey's tourism sector in fallout due to the war in Ukraine

12 May 2022; MEMO: The tourism sector in Turkey is hardest hit by the war between Ukraine and Russia, as the two nations are the first largest group visit Turkey, DW reports.

According to the report, in 2021, around 4.7 million Russian tourists visited Turkey. German holidaymakers were the second-largest group, followed by Ukrainians.
