India: Tata Sons top bidder for Air India: Sources

New Delhi, Oct 1 (PTI) Tata Sons has emerged as the top bidder for the takeover of debt-laden state-run airline Air India but the bid is yet to be approved by a group of ministers headed by Home Minister Amit Shah, sources said.

Financial bids put in by the salt-to-software conglomerate and SpiceJet promoter Ajay Singh were opened a few days back and were vetted by Core Group of Secretaries on Disinvestment headed by Cabinet Secretary on Wednesday, sources with knowledge of the matter said.

Jordan to resume flights to Damascus

28 Sep 2021; MEMO: The Jordanian government has agreed to resume flights to the Syrian capital Damascus as of 3 October after a 10-year hiatus as a result of the Syrian civil war.

Jordan's Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya also announced the reopening of the Jordanian-Syrian border from tomorrow morning to allow for the movement of freight and travellers.

Canada lifts ban on direct flights from India

Toronto, Sep 26 (PTI) Canada will allow direct flights from India from Monday, lifting the ban on them after a gap of more than five months.

Announcing the decision, Transport Canada on Saturday in a tweet said: "Beginning at 00:01 EDT on September 27, direct flights from India can land in Canada with additional public health measures in place."

India: Kanpur remains on top in road accidents for fourth year

Kanpur: The city has been maintaining its name among the list of 15 districts in Uttar Pradesh for deaths in accidents. It comes with a total of 563 accidents.

This figure puts it remains on the top position undoubtedly. This negative tendency continues for the last four years. 

According to the news reports the situation does not change even after the awareness programmes.

Ten districts remain popular for accidents as well as deaths.

Strangely enough, more than 38% of black spots are related to these fifteen districts.

Kenya reopens borders for Indian travellers

Mumbai, Sep 23 (PTI) Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) on Thursday said the African nation has reopened its borders for Indian travellers, which were closed for a brief period due to the second wave of Covid-19.

The temporary ban of passenger flights from India was revoked after a brief period of suspension since May this year as a result of the spike of Covid-19 pandemic in the country, KTB said in a statement.

UK adds Covishield to approved vaccines list in updated travel advisory

London, Sep 22 (PTI) The UK government on Wednesday added Covishield, the Indian-manufactured Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, to an updated international travel advisory.

The move follows widespread condemnation of the Serum Institute of India manufactured vaccines not being included in a list of eligible COVID-19 vaccines recognised under Britain's reviewed international travel norms, effective from October 4.

Bangladesh removed from UK COVID travel red list

19 Sep 2021; AA: Bangladesh has been removed from Britain’s COVID-19 travel red list following repeated requests by the Bangladeshi government.

“Travelers from Bangladesh will no longer require 10-day hotel quarantine from 22 September 2021,” Saida Muna Tasneem, Bangladesh’s high commissioner to the UK, said in a tweet early Saturday.

Elephant tusk dating back 17M years found in southwestern Turkey

19 Sep 2021; AA: An elephant tusk dating back 17 million years has been found in southwestern Turkey, scientists announced on Saturday.

The prehistoric tusk was discovered in Buldan in the Denizli province, along with fossils from an estimated 38 different species, said the excavation team.

A group of paleoanthropologists, geologists and students carried out the surface survey under the coordination of the Culture and Tourism Ministry.

India: Foreign tourists may be allowed soon, free visas

New Delhi, Sep 19 (PTI) Amid a decline in Covid cases in the country, India may soon reopen its doors for foreign tourists for the first time in one-and-a-half years, officials said.

First five lakh foreign tourists will be issued visas free of cost in an attempt to revive the tourism, hospitality and aviation sectors badly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020 when a nationwide lockdown was announced.

UK removes Turkey from COVID-19 travel red list

18 Sep 2021; MEMO: The UK today removed Turkey from its red coronavirus travel list, allowing travel without compulsory hotel quarantine on arrival, and so easing travel and tourism between the two countries, Anadolu Agency reports.

With the latest update, Britain's traffic light system is now scraped and a simpler, "go" and "don't go" system was introduced.
