DAR ES SALAAM, Aug 30 (NNN-IRIN) – Authorities in Tanzania’s Zanzibar, yesterday expressed concern, over what they described as a slow pace in the vaccination against COVID-19.

Abdallah Suleiman Ali, director general in the Ministry of Health, Social Welfare, Elderly, Gender and Children, said, only 10,866 people have been vaccinated by Aug 24, against 85,000 doses received in June and July.

Zanzibar launched the COVID-19 vaccination campaign on July 22.

DAR ES SALAAM, Aug 25 (Reuters) - An attacker wielding an assault rifle was shot dead after killing three police officers and an employee of a private security company near the French embassy in Tanzania on Wednesday, President Samia Suluhu Hassan said.

Hassan said on Twitter that the attacker had been "neutralised" and "calm has returned".

DAR ES SALAAM, Aug 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Tanzania’s president has said there were people who doubted she was qualified to lead when she first became head of state because she was a woman.

Some “don’t believe that women can be better presidents and we are here to show them,” Samia Suluhu Hassan said.

In March, the 61-year-old was sworn in after her predecessor died in office.

She is currently Africa’s only female political head of state. The Ethiopian presidency is a ceremonial role.

DAR ES SALAAM, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Wednesday launched the country's COVID-19 vaccination drive and received a jab of Johnson & Johnson vaccine in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

Speaking at the State House before launching the vaccination drive, Hassan told Tanzanians that the vaccines are safe and she would not take any risk, in a bid to assure the public of the safety of the vaccines.

Other top officials vaccinated at the launch included the prime minister, the chief justice, and the foreign minister.

DAR ES SALAAM, June 26 (Reuters) - President Samia Suluhu Hassan said on Saturday that Tanzania will look to revive a $10 billion stalled port project on the eastern coast of the country.

Tanzania inked a framework agreement in 2013 with China Merchants Holdings International to construct the port and a special economic zone that aimed to transform the east African country into a trade and transport hub to rival its neighbours.

DAR ES SALAAM, Apr 23 (NNN-IRIN) – Tanzania’s weather watchdog, yesterday, issued an alert, saying, a tropical cyclone called Jobo, may cause strong winds and waves in the country’s coastal belt of Lindi and Mtwara regions.

The cyclone, which appeared in the Indian Ocean, is currently in Madagascar heading north, said the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) in a statement.

The statement said, the tropical cyclone could make landfall over the north-eastern coast of Lindi region on Apr 25.

DAR ES SALAAM, April 20 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan will address parliament on Thursday, Speaker Job Ndugai said.

He told the House during the morning session on Monday that all Members of Parliament (MPs) – who have been planning to travel out of Dodoma – must put their plans on hold until after the President’s address.

“The President will address the Parliament on Thursday from 4pm….Those MPs who are making arrangements to leave the Capital City, must postpone such plans until that day passes,” he said.

DAR ES SALAAM, Apr 16 (NNN-IRIN) – At least 100 elephants raided five villages in Tanzania’s southern highlands, over the past two weeks, destroying over 400 hectares of crops, officials said yesterday.

The elephants, from the nearby Ruaha National Park, destroyed farms planted with maize, padi and round potatoes in five villages, in Igava ward of Mbarali district in Mbeya region, said, Gaitan Madindo, Igava ward executive officer.

DAR ES SALAAM, April 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The government of Tanzania said it has completed payments for the purchase of three new planes.

This was said by the Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa while addressing Parliament on the estimates and expenditure of the Office of the Prime Minister and its institutions for the financial year 2021/2022.

Majaliwa said the aeroplanes are expected to arrive in the 2021/22 financial year therefore bringing the number of government owned fleet to 12.

DAR ES SALAAM, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Samia Suluhu Hassan was on Friday sworn in as Tanzanian president, becoming the country's first female president.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the State House in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam, following the death of President John Magufuli on Wednesday.

After the ceremony, Hassan received a 21-gun-salute and inspected a guard of honor mounted by the Tanzania People's Defense Forces.
