East African Community upbeat US Pres-elect Biden will revive stalled trade talks

ARUSHA (Tanzania), Dec 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The East African Community is optimistic that the US President elect Joe Biden will revive the negotiations and implementations of the EAC-US Trade and Investment Partnership.

This came to the fore as leaders from the EAC congratulated Biden for his election win, with many expressing hope that his presidency will boost ties with the regional bloc.

Five killed as two trucks collide head-on in northern Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least five people died on the spot and one was seriously injured on Saturday morning after two trucks collided head-on in Tanzania's northern district of Handeni in Tanga region, said police.

Blasius Chatanda, the Tanga regional police commander, said the two trucks burnt to ashes after the collision at Kitumbi area.

Each vehicle had three passengers and five of them were killed on the spot, Chatanda told a news conference.

Tanzania's re-elected leader keeps finance minister Mpango in new government

DAR ES SALAAM (Reuters) - Tanzania’s re-elected President John Magufuli on Friday re-appointed Philip Mpango as finance minister, and promised continued reforms to the mining sector to help deliver the goal of 8% annual economic growth in his second term.

Nicknamed the “Bulldozer”, Magufuli was declared the winner of polls last month after securing 84% of the vote, although the opposition have rejected the results, alleging widespread irregularities.

Tanzanian opposition party says police kill 7 ahead of vote

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania (AP) — A major opposition party in Tanzania is accusing police of shooting dead at least seven citizens amid unrest over alleged fraud on the eve of the country’s presidential election.

The ACT Wazalendo party on Tuesday also said police in the semi-autonomous island region arrested its Zanzibar presidential candidate, Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad. A police official in Zanzibar city, Mohammed Hassan Haji, confirmed the arrest to The Associated Press but gave no details.

500 volunteers fighting fire on Africa's tallest mountain

Nairobi (Kenya), Oct 14 (AP/PTI) Tanzanian authorities say 500 volunteers have been trying to put out a fire on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's tallest peak. The flames can be seen from miles away.

A Tanzania National Parks statement said Tuesday that the volunteers have managed to limit the fire's spread. Spokesman Pascal Shelutete said the area still burning is known as Kifunika Hill.

He said the cause of the fire has yet to be established. Allan Kijazi, head of Tanzania National Parks, said the fire has consumed 28 square kilometers of vegetation.

Tanzania, Uganda leaders agree to fast-track crude oil pipeline project

DAR ES SALAAM, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian President John Magufuli and his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni have signed an agreement for the construction of a 3.5 billion-U.S.-dollar crude oil pipeline.

The agreement, signed in Magufuli's native town of Chato in northwest Tanzania on Sunday, paved the way for the progress of the 1,445 km pipeline running from Uganda's oilfields in Hoima to Tanzania's Tanga port.

The two leaders urged officials from both countries to immediately conclude remaining issues for the project and move on.

Tanzania’s ruling party launches Pres Magufuli’s re-election campaign

DAR ES SALAAM, Aug 30 (NNN-Xinhua) — Tanzania’s ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi held a rally to mark the launch of President John Magufuli’s re-election bid in the country’s capital Dodoma.

Magufuli, who took office in November 2015 after succeeding former President Jakaya Kikwete, is seeking re-election for a second and final five-year term in the Oct 28 general election.

In his address at the rally, Magufuli promised to complete unfinished projects and start new ones aimed at making Tanzania “a great nation” if re-elected.

Tanzania opposition leader who survived 2017 gun attack to return from exile

DAR ES SALAAM (Reuters) - A Tanzanian opposition leader and potential presidential candidate said on Monday he had started his return journey to the East African nation, days after police warned his supporters against gathering unlawfully to welcome him.

Tundu Lissu, a fierce critic of President John Magufuli’s government, was shot 16 times in an attack by unknown gunmen outside his residence in the administrative capital Dodoma in September 2017.

World Bank categorizes Tanzania as middle income country: official

DAR ES SALAAM, July 2 (Xinhua) -- The World Bank has categorized Tanzania as a lower-middle income country after the country made economic reforms, including making consistent plans and taking hard decisions aimed at improving its economic development, a senior official said on Thursday.

"Discipline in financial expenditure and the prevailing peace and tranquility also helped the country to earn the middle income status from the World Bank," Hassan Abbasi, the chief government spokesperson told a news conference in the capital Dodoma.
