India: IIM-Ahmedabad chosen by AP govt to help curb corruption

Amaravati, Nov 17 (PTI) The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has been roped in by the Andhra Pradesh government to help it curb corruption in the state administration, a top bureaucrat has said.

The institute would study the structural issues in the government departments in relation to corruption and come out with measures to tackle them, the official told PTI.

India: Journalist hacked to death in AP district

Amaravati, Oct 15 (PTI) Unidentified assailants hacked to death the local reporter of a Telugu daily in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday night, police said.

K Satyanarayana, 45, reporter of Andhra Jyothy, died on the spot while the assailants fled after committing the crime, they said.

The incident occurred at S Annavaram village.

India: Two more Naxal terrorists gunned down in AP-Odisha border

Amaravati (AP), Sep 23 (PTI) Two Maoists were gunned down in an encounter with the elite Greyhounds of Andhra Pradesh Police in the Eastern Ghats forests of Visakhapatnam on Monday, a day after three ultras were killed in the region, officials said.

The two encounters within 24 hours come at a time when the outlawed CPI (Maoist) is celebrating its Formation Day, they said.

India: 3 Naxal terrorists killed on Andhra-Odisha border

Amaravati (AP), Sep 22 (PTI) Elite Greyhounds of Andhra Pradesh police on Sunday killed three members of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) in an encounter in Visakhapatnam district on the AP-Odisha border, police said.

Additional Director General of Police (Greyhounds) Nalin Prabhat said the operation was based on a confirmed intelligence and the anti-Maoist force was in relentless pursuit of the Maoists despite heavy rains, thick vegetation and very rough terrain in the eastern ghat.

India: About 50 people feared drowned in tourist boat capsize

Amaravati, Sep 15 (PTI) Several people were feared drowned when a tourist boat capsized in the swollen Godavari river in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday afternoon while over 10 passengers were said to have been rescued, police sources said.

The exact details of the mishap and the number of persons in the ill-fated boat were not immediately available.

India: Father gets 5 year RI for sexually assaulting daughter

Hyderabad, Aug 23 (PTI) A 53-year-old man has been sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 5,000 by a local court here for sexually assaulting his daughter.

Lingam Kumar, a resident of Alwal here, repeatedly sexually assaulted the girl for two years when she was just ten years, the Cyberabad Police said in a press release on Friday.

In July 2014, she informed her school teacher about her condition following which the district child protection unit was alerted.

India: BJP protests non-Hindu pilgrimage ads on bus tickets

Tirupati (AP), Aug 23 (PTI) Bus tickets carrying advertisements of Jerusalem yatra and Haj pilgrimage issued to devotees proceeding to the famous Lord Venkateswara temple at nearby Tirumala tiggered a protest by the BJP here on Friday against the state-run transport corporation.

As a controversy broke out over the issue, Endowment Minister Vellampalli Srinivas said the tickets were not meant for Tirupati and an inquiry has been ordered.

India: Muslim org to challenge Triple Talaq Act in SC

Hyderabad, Aug 1 (PTI) Hitting out at the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre over passage of triple talaq bill in the Parliament, a city-based Muslim organisation said on Thursday that it would move the Supreme Court against the law.

The Seerat un Nabi (PBUH) Academy alleged that the central government has sought to dilute the 'Muslim Sharia' (Islamic law).

India: AP CM to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem in August

Amaravati, Jul 29 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy will undertake two trips abroad in August, one on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the other on a personal visit to Dallas in the US.

These will be his maiden foreign tours after becoming Chief Minister on May 30.

While government orders related to his Jerusalem trip from August 1 to 4 have been issued, those related to the US visit are awaited.

India: Minor girl raped by neighbour in Telangana

Hyderabad, Jul 24 (PTI) A 13-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and raped by her neighbour here, police said on Wednesday.

According to a complaint filed by the mother of the victim, the girl had gone to buy some grocery around 8 pm when the man, who lives in the same locality, forcibly took her to his house on a motorcycle and committed the crime, they said.
