Cambodian scholar says Beijing Winter Olympics promotes solidarity, should not be politicized

PHNOM PENH, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will promote solidarity and cooperation and should not be politicized, a scholar has said.

Any attempt to politicize the Olympic Games and sport "can damage the Olympic spirit as well as the purity of the Olympic movement," Kin Phea, director-general of the International Relations Institute at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said Wednesday.

Phea made the remarks during an international conference on China's role in the 21st century and its relations with ASEAN.

Cambodia, Vietnam sign deals to further enhance ties

PHNOM PENH, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia and Vietnam signed seven documents on Tuesday to further boost their bilateral relations and cooperation, a senior Cambodian official said.

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen and visiting Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc presided over the signing ceremony after their meeting at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh.

Cambodia To Appoint Foreign Minister As ASEAN Chair’s New Envoy To Myanmar

PHNOM PENH, Dec 15 (NNN-AKP) – Cambodian Prime Minister, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, said today that, he would name the country’s Foreign Minister, Prak Sokhonn, as the ASEAN chair’s new special envoy to Myanmar.

Cambodia will be the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for 2022.

Sokhonn will succeed the bloc’s current ASEAN special envoy, Brunei’s Second Foreign Minister, Erywan bin Pehin Yusof.

US envoy conveys concerns to Cambodia about Myanmar, China

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — A U.S. State Department envoy conveyed concerns to top Cambodian officials on Friday about bilateral and regional issues, including the crisis in Myanmar and the construction of Chinese military facilities at a Cambodian naval base.

The visit by Counselor Derek Chollet to Phnom Penh came days after the United States ordered an arms embargo on Cambodia, citing deepening Chinese military influence, corruption and human rights abuses in the Southeast Asian country.

Cambodian PM Says Eldest Son Manet Will Be One Of PM Candidates After Him

PHNOM PENH, Dec 2 (NNN-AKP) – Cambodian Prime Minister, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, revealed today that, his eldest son, Hun Manet, will be one of the prime ministerial candidates, after the father’s possible retirement in 2030.

Hun Sen, 69, said, he would stay in power until 2030, and after that, he would name Manet to be a prime ministerial candidate in general elections.

Cambodia Allows Entertainment Venues In Capital To Reopen

PHNOM PENH, Nov 30 (NNN-AKP) – Cambodia today, allowed all karaoke parlours, nightclubs, and bars in the capital Phnom Penh to reopen after a long halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Karaoke parlours, nightclubs and discotheques in Phnom Penh are allowed to reopen from today, with the adaptation to the new normal,” Phnom Penh governor, Khuong Sreng, said.

Business owners must strictly comply with the standard operating procedure, assigning staff members to inspect the COVID-19 vaccination cards of customers, and screen their temperature at the entrance, he said.

Cambodian king heads to France for UNESCO's general assembly

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni on Wednesday left here for the French capital Paris to attend the 41st General Conference of UNESCO on the occasion of its 75th anniversary, which will be held on Nov. 10-14.

In a royal message to the Cambodian people, Sihamoni, 68, said he will be absent from the kingdom from Nov. 10 to Nov. 15 and during his absence, Senate President Samdech Say Chhum will be the acting head of state.

Cambodia: Autistic Cambodian teen, jailed for online comments, freed

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — An autistic Cambodian teenager was released from prison Wednesday after serving time for posting comments critical of the government on social media in a case that has attracted global attention.

Kak Sovannchhay, 16, was met by his mother and supporters outside Prey Sar prison on the outskirts of Phnom Penh.

He clutched a bouquet of red roses and lilies tightly to his chest and smiled shyly as reporters snapped photos.

Seven Prisoners Escape From Prison In NE Cambodia: Police Chief

PHNOM PENH, Nov 8 (NNN-AKP) – Seven dangerous escapees are being sought, after breaking out of the Stung Treng Provincial Prison, in North-eastern Cambodia early today, said Major General Aun Sivutha, police chief of Stung Treng province.

The seven inmates were spending their prison terms, ranging from four years to life imprisonment, for drug trafficking and theft, he said.
